Loyalty in the Age of the Portal
Since the NCAA revised its transfer rules in 2021, the transfer portal has become a focal point of college athletics. With over 1,500 Division I men’s basketball players entering the portal annually, it has become common for athletes to seek greener pastures, more playing time, or a better fit. However, Corey Tripp, a 6’3” point guard from Medina, Ohio, chose a different path. Despite receiving interest from several programs throughout his career, Tripp remained loyal to Wofford University, a mid-major program tucked away in the heart of South Carolina.
Tripp arrived at Wofford in the fall of 2021, a three-star recruit with a strong high school résumé but little fanfare. He chose Wofford over more prominent programs because of the culture, coaching staff, and the opportunity to build something meaningful from the ground up.
As a freshman, Tripp was able to see the court more than the average freshman, averaging 1.5 points per game while continuing to fight for his spot throughout the season. Though Wofford finished with a 19-13 record, Tripp’s leadership was starting to take over.
Temptation and the Portal
By the end of his sophomore and Junior years, Tripp’s stats had improved to 8.8 points per game, then a giant leap to 15.6 per game, and he had emerged as one of the top guards in the conference. With Wofford failing to make the NCAA Tournament, several Power Five schools reached out, hoping to lure Tripp away with promises of national exposure, NIL opportunities, and a chance to compete at a higher level.
Still, Tripp never entered his name in the portal. He credited his bond with head coach Dwight Perry, his teammates, and the Wofford community for his decision to stay.
Building a Legacy
Tripp’s Senior year marked a turning point. With a more refined and veteran skillset, he led Wofford to its first conference title in 6 years and an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament. Although the team exited in the first round, the achievement was historic, and Tripp became a household name in Wofford athletics.
In his senior season, Tripp averaged 14.3 points per game, 3.1 assists, and 4.0 rebounds. He led the team in many clutch scenarios, became a 1,000-point scorer, and solidified his Wofford legacy.
